Diamonds Direct vs. Private Dealer St Louis, MO, USA

Hello, Reddit.
I am beginning to shop diamonds and engagement rings, with the goal of proposing in November-December 2017. My girlfriend is a woman of very simple tastes, and I am shopping for a diamond in the 0.5-0.75 carat range.
I am not looking for advice on particular stones right now, but rather for information on the retailer/wholesaler/private jeweler debate.
I assume that I can probably get the best price online at Blue Nile, James Allen, etc., but it really seems like a pain in the butt to me to have to send our diamond ring away in the mail every time I want it serviced/inspected. Therefore, I'd ideally like to buy it from a brick-and-mortar location in St. Louis, where I expect to live for the foreseeable future.
St. Louis has a Diamonds Direct store, which I've been to. Diamonds Direct definitely has better prices than any major retailer like Kay or Shane Co., and I like the lifetime service that they offer for free, which even includes rhodium plating while you wait. Has anyone shopped at Diamonds Direct before? What did you think?
The other option is to shop at a private jeweler, but there are so many private dealers, I don't know where to start looking. Can I expect to get a competitive price on a diamond from a private jeweler? Does anyone have any recommendations for a jeweler in the St. Louis area?

Hi again! I was just responding to your other post; maybe I answered this question there already. I'm biased on this (since I AM a private dealer), but I definitely think private dealer is the way to go. Your assumption that BN, JA, etc. are the cheapest is not right - I typical sell at similar prices to those sites, and often a bit lower.
I recommend you find a good private jeweler and see what they have to offer!

While not as low as some people hoped... that's still only $200 above MSRP of G923 or T248... so yeah, that's a slap in their faces. Will be interesting to hear long term reviews of Moza gear, since they're still fairly new... but seems lots of happy early adopters out there.
